SAFELY NAVIGATING TURBULENT REEFS

Though today a common occurrence, divorces are often complicated affairs. The spouses’ emotions are often ragged and raw. They are usually angry at one another for not being the person the other one wanted them to be. Spouses often feel disappointed, and ashamed, feeling perhaps like they failed at making the marriage work. They naturally grieve the death of the relationship, and resent all the time and effort they’ve invested into it. These secondary feelings can easily morph into further rage at one another.

Even without the emotions running hot, divorce would be complicated. The spouses had led entangled lives for so long. They’ve joined or commingled their finances and living expenses. They may have investments, businesses and pensions together. All these must now be disentangled and divided fairly and justly.

Spouses also established a new family unit. Their extended families were joined in myriad ways. They might have children together. At the cusp of divorce, a spouse’s relationship with their children and close-extended-family-members of the other feels threatened and insecure. These insecurities lend a further level of anxiety onto the proceedings.

Your future financial, emotional, and relational health is, therefore, dependent on having a skilled lawyer at your side to guide and protect you through these complicated waters. Obviously, an incompetent lawyer, one who doesn’t know the controlling law or who won’t do the hard work necessary to prepare your case thoroughly, won’t do, leaving you exposed to too much danger.
